Tulip Fever

Starring Alicia Vikander and Christoph Waltz

Tulip Fever, directed by Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) and based on a novel by Deborah Moggach (author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), boasts a script by Tom Stoppard and an impressive cast that includes three Oscar winners.

Poster for the historical romantic drama Tulip FeverSet in 17th-century Netherlands during the speculation boom known as Tulip Mania, when single bulbs would sell for enormous sums, Tulip Fever is an opulent period drama reminiscent of The Girl With A Pearl Earring. Indeed, the set design and cinematography frequently resemble a painting by Vermeer.

Christoph Waltz plays Cornelis Sandvoort, a man grown rich from the tulip trade, who scores a beautiful young wife, Sofia (Alicia Vikander, Oscar winner for The Danish Girl) on the back of his success. When he arranges to have her portrait painted by the dashing Jan van Loos (Dane DeHaan), however, he finds his frustrated bride’s attentions straying. Sophia and Jan start secretly investing in the tulip market themselves, hoping to earn enough to run away together. Anyone familiar with Dutch history knows that such speculation would have been more than a little risky.

Rounding out the cast is Dame Judi Dench as the ungodly and rather saucy Abbess of St Ursula’s, who rescues orphaned children and dabbles in tulips on the side.
